Best and Worst Children's Book Movie

 The Good
1. The Chronicles of Narnia : The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Book adaptations don’t come much better than this. The acting is wonderful, the effects are stunning and the script flows almost as nicely as the novel itself. While the performances from the children playing the Pevensies are great, I honestly can’t picture any two people more perfect to play the White Witch (Tilda Swinton) and Aslan (Liam Neeson).

2. Charlotte’s Web (1973)

While the 2006 live-action(ish) version is stellar on its own, one can’t help but love the original. Classrooms across the world got a taste of Wilbur and Charlotte’s world and have gone back for seconds ever since. If you’re looking for the ultimate story of life to show to a young kid, Charlotte’s Web is your best bet.

3. The Jungle Book (1967)

How many of you got “Bear Necessities” stuck in your head when you saw this? Admit it -- you did! Baloo and Mowgli are among Disney’s icons, and rightfully so: The songs are catchy and the animation is so perfect, it’s as if the story was picked from your brain and put on the big screen. Not many films can say that.

4. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

The 1971 original is a classic. Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, the demented chocolate-factory owner, is one of his best performances to date. Despite being a children’s book adaptation, the “scary tunnel” scene was ranked  No. 74 on Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments list.

5. James and the Giant Peach (1996)

What happens when you cross the wonderful children’s book author Roald Dahl with the visionary animator Henry Selick? You get this fantastic film. The best part about watching this is that it not only entertains children viewers but also the adults as well. It is truly picture perfect.

Honorable Mentions:

The Iron Giant (1999) – If you don’t bawl like a damn baby every single time, you’re heartless.

The Princess Bride (1987) – It seems wrong not to include this on the list. It’s a total classic.

The Bad
1. The Cat in the Hat (2003)

While I want to blame Mike Myers for this crap, I can’t (at least not entirely). While the book was pretty wacky, the film was not. The characters you knew and loved from the book just weren’t interpreted well for film -- not to mention the distinct lack of color in all of the characters except the Cat.

2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Not even Ron Howard could keep this movie from the massive suck. The original animated 1966 film was done so well that there was really no reason for a remake. The “tweaks” in the new version were extra-unnecessary, and Jim Carrey was even more over-the-top than usual.

3. Ella Enchanted (2004)

Cary Elwes was in one great kids book adaptation (The Princess Bride) but he couldn't save this one. Unfortunately, a clever children’s book is turned into a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy a la Disney. If you want to see Anne Hathaway in a pretty dress, stick to The Princess Diaries.

4. Curious George (2006)

I’m not sure there was a kid who didn’t read these books. Unfortunately for the movie, it seems more like a movie about the Man with the Yellow Hat (voiced by Will Ferrell) than Curious George himself. Half the fun of this series was seeing what shenanigans George got into. Who cares about a man bitching about his bright yellow suit?

5. Eragon (2006)

You’d figure that a book written by a kid would make for an ideal adaptation. Sadly, that wasn’t the case here. The cast gives horrendous performances -- which is sad considering Jeremy Irons is in it -- and the film’s plot couldn’t be further from the book’s. There’s a reason why they canned the rest of this film series.

Honorable Mentions:

Jumanji (1995) – Even Robin Williams couldn’t save this movie, and that says something.

The Secret Garden (1987) – What’s the point of adapting a book if you’re going to destroy the plot?

20 best Ways to Increase Alexa Rank

1. Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day. According to some, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor.

 2. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step.

 3. Work in an Office or own a company? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers. Perhaps it will be useful to note that this may work only when dynamic or different IPs are used.

 4. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension entails.

 5. Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you and send you targeted traffic (i.e. visitors with the toolbar already installed). This gradually has effects on your Alexa ranking.

 6. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might help in some way.

 7. Flaunt your URL in webmaster forums. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback. It’s as well as a lovely way to give back to the community if you have useful articles to share with others.

 8. Write content that's related to webmasters. This can fall in the category of domaining and SEO, four fields in which most webmasters will have the Alexa toolbar installed. Promote your content on social networking web-sites and webmaster forums.

 10. Post in Asian social networking web-sites or forums. Some webmasters have suggested that East Asian web users are sizable Alexa toolbar fans, judging by the presence of several Asia-based web-sites in the Alexa Top 500. I suggest trying this only if you have the time or capacity to do so.

 9. Use Alexa redirects on your website URL.  Replace doshdosh.com with the URL for your website. Leave this redirected URL in blog comments as well as forum signatures. This redirect will count a unique IP address two times a day so clicking it multiple times won’t help. There is no official proof that redirects positively benefit your Alexa Rank, so use with caution.

 12. Get Dugg or Stumbled. This usually brings giant numbers of visitors to your website and the sheer amount will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Naturally, you’ll require to create link worthy material.

 11. Generate a webmaster tools category on your website. This is a magnet for webmasters who will often revisit your website to gain access to the tools. Aaron Wall’s webpage on SEOTools is a lovely example.

 14. Generate an Alexa category on your blog and use it to include any articles or news about Alexa. This acts as an easily available resource for webmasters or casual search visitors while helping you rank in the search engines.

 13. Use PayperClick Campaigns. Buying adverts on search engines such as Google or Exact Seek will help bring in Traffic. Doubly useful when your ad is highly relevant to webmasters.

 16. Buy banners and links for traffic from webmaster forums and web-sites. A prominent and well displayed ad will drive loads of webmaster traffic to your website, which can significantly boost your rank.

 15. Optimize your popular posts. Got a popular post that consistently receives traffic from the search engines? Include a widget/graph at the bottom of the post, link to your Alexa post or use Alexa redirection on your internal URLs.

 17. Hire forum posters to pimp your website. Either buy signatures in webmaster forums or promote specific articles or material in your website on a regular basis. You can easily find posters for hire in Digital Point and other webmaster forums.

 18. Pay Cybercafe owners to install the Alexa toolbar and set your website as the homepage for all their computers. This might be difficult to arrange and isn’t a viable solution for most. I’m keeping this four in because some have suggested that it does work.

 19. Use MySpace . This is a tiny shady so I don’t recommended it unless you’re interested in artificially inflating your Alexa Rank. Use visually beautiful pictures or banners and link them to your redirected Alexa URL. This will be most effective if your website has content that's actually relevant to the MySpace Crowd.

 20. Try Alexa auto-surfs. Do we work? Maybe for brand spanking new sites. I think we are mostly suitable for new web-sites with a poor Alexa rank. Note that there be problems when you try to use auto surfs alongside contextual ads like Adsense. We aren’t also long term solutions to improving your Alexa Rank so I suggest using with caution.

Cool Email Marketing Secrets Marketing

1. You don’t need to know HTML. Again, programs like Constant Contact make it easy for dummies to generate pretty templates (I mean, I make them, so come on, they can’t be that hard). I actually don’t like it when a client wants to complicate it & makes me use HTML. Me ‘n HTML don’t get along so well.

2. Email marketing is not hard. I know it seems complicated, but with email marketing application like Constant Contact, creating professional emails is easy.

3. Emails don’t have to be blatant sales pitches. I actually like the people I email, so I love to send useful articles about marketing to them. Things that they will find helpful, but also things that will remind them how super clever I am when it comes to marketing.

4. There's a way to target your list. I HATE untargeted email lists. I don’t buy lists. But if you start slow, you can ensure you send your emails to people who actually kind of care. & might buy from you.

5. Not every email is spam. You can get nice results from email marketing (as long as you’re not slimy about it). Email is a great way to inform people about your product if done correctly.

6. The best days to send emails are Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. Why? Because on Mondays people are bombarded with email & are likely to delete yours. On Fridays everyone wants to play hooky, so they don’t need to read your stinkin’ email.

7. Email marketing isn’t dead. I brought this debate up before but still stick to my guns. Email is a great way to reach a wider audience.

8. You can track your results. Email programs like (ahem) Constant Contact (I’m sorry. I just like them & haven’t found anything better) let you see how plenty of people opened an email, how plenty of clicked on a link & how plenty of unsubscribed. You can try different days, times & subject lines to see which get the best results.

9. Email marketing can save you thousands of dollars. Compared to other forms of web advertising, email is cheap. So save your funds on the ad in the Wall Street Journal & consider emailing a targeted list of future customers.

5 Tips For Better use of Facebook Social Networking

Facebook is a social networking site that is enormously popular, but it can be a frustrating user experience. The design of Facebook leaves a lot to be desired and there are many choices for things to do on Facebook. Also some of the more popular Facebook activities are trivial instead of useful - throwing sheep is an oft-quoted example.

Having said that, there is no doubt that Facebook is a powerful social networking device. So how can you best utilize it and find the lovely apps? In this post they goal to find out. We'll be focusing specifically on social activities, than the many other potential uses of Facebook

Tip 1: Update Your Status Regularly

This is a simple thing to do to keep your Facebook profile active. Right at the top of the page there's a place where you can "write something." Usually a comment about what you're doing or thinking. One time a day, or even one time every few days, is . But update it to keep your page interesting.

Tip 2. Use Groups (a.k.a. Lists in Facebook Terminology)

Groups are a core feature of social networking on the Web. To effectively use Facebook, they recommend you set up some groups so that you can filter content. Three person who does this well is our own Marshall Kirkpatrick. Marshall says that they generally scans his Facebook homepage first, then clicks to his groups for family and elderly friends from school. They noted that "this way most of my time spent on Facebook is not re-reading the same things I have already read on Twitter."To set lists up for your Facebook account, go to your Facebook homepage and click the "more" link on the lefthand sidebar. You will see a link entitled "Create new list" at the bottom - click on that to generate a new group.

There is a bit of a trick to setting this groups feature up. Facebook calls this feature "lists," probably to differentiate them from its other Groups feature (which have been usurped by 'Pages' now). Confused? Get used to it, Facebook navigation is dreadful.

Tip 3: Add Your Content From Other Sources (Carefully...)
In this day plus age, you are likely generating content in more than a few places on the Web. This ranges from the extreme cases (early adopters who have personal RSS feeds coming out their ears), to those who may just use YouTube as well as a couple of other niche social web-sites.

Five thing we'd caution, which this author took long to notice: don't pipe your FriendFeed content in to Facebook if you aggregate a lot of content in to FriendFeed! It quickly overpowers your Wall plus will likely annoy the friends you have who also subscribe to your FriendFeed.

Plenty of early adopters use FriendFeed to aggregate their 'lifestream' of content from multiple sources. Facebook just bought FriendFeed, so expect to see it integrated in to Facebook over time. As of now, if you have more than a few content sources plus they are not necessarily the well-known ones like YouTube or Last.fm, then you'll require to use FriendFeed or an equivalent lifestreaming product to aggregate those feeds. But if you find FriendFeed just a bit geeky (plus plenty of people do), then you can adequately enrich your Facebook profile with external content.

Tip 4: Brighten Up Your Profile With Photos and Videos

If instead of Facebook you usually use a specialist photo site (like Flickr) or video site (like Vimeo), then you'll require to search around for ways to export your files. I use Flickr and didn't find a satisfactory way to export photos from Flickr to Facebook's Photo albums. But by my Twitter network I managed to discovered a plug-in for iPhoto, which allows Mac users to bulk export from iPhoto to Facebook.

Tip 5: Search Out the Best Facebook Apps

Ever since Facebook became a development platform back in May 2007, thousands of apps have been built to add to your Facebook page. As noted in the introduction, these range from trivial (e.g. sheep throwing) to very useful. The best tip here is to find apps that complement your interests.

Our advice is to search the directory for keywords of interest to you. The quality of apps varies greatly & often there's errors (at least I came across them several times when researching this news story). When you find an app you like, you can add it to your profile. I added an Art app recently, for example.

You can browse a user's apps by clicking the oddly-named 'Boxes' tab on their profile page.

Xbox 360 May Get Its Own Avatar Arcade

The Xbox 360 may be getting its own retro-themed arcade space, an environment that looks remarkably similar to the one competitor Sony offers in PlayStation Home. The above pictures come from a rumored survey hinting at an "AvatArcade."
The name AvatArcade, despite its awkward camel-capping, is one of the better naming options being surveyed, according to details forwarded to Kotaku by a tipster. The others include Game Room, RetroCade, RetroGame, Game Preserve, Game Gallery, Tower of ROM, Tower of Game(s), Classics and Classics LIVE. Yes, Tower of ROM is far superior, but we just don't see that one sticking.
The survey info passed on to Kotaku doesn't offer much in the way of further details, but does indicate that publisher Atari will likely be one of the company's with a presence in the proposed space. The virtual arcade cabinets appear to feature playable copies of Atari's RealSports Baseball and Realsports Basketball, not to mention heavy Atari logo branding.
Looks like Intellivision games may also be on offer, as banners for Shark! Shark! and Star Strike hang in the same space. If those games are representative of the titles that would appear in the "AvatArcade," we're not sure what's so arcade-y about this.
The survey also hints that Microsoft may be charging for the Avatar-supported game room, asking surveyees what title would "compel" them to purchase the product.
We've checked in with Microsoft to see what they have to say.

Sony X Series Hands On: It Feels Like Special Effects

How light is Sony's carbon-fiber X Series, the "lightest notebook in the world"? It feels fake, like a trick.
That's in part, because it is a trick, since it has netbook guts and Sony's asking you to pay $1300 for it. But, in your hand, it makes you question how skinny is too skinny, how much weightlessness (1.6 pounds of it, to be precise) is an asset before it approaches nothingness. (The fatty VGA port very nearly destroys the illusion, though.) The effect, still, is remarkable, at least at first touch.
Sturdiness? It borders on feeling fragile, but never quite crosses that line. When you try to bend it, you definitely feel like there's a breaking point that won't require a ton of additional force on your part.
The keyboard layout is around 90 percent of full sized which is why it feels a little cramped, but I typed better than I expected, honestly, even with its tiny ticky-tacky keys that fit the fingertips of a small child. The multitouch trackpad only supports zoom gestures—no two-finger scrolling—which are janky at best, at least inside of Internet Exploder. (Sub-question: Why can't PC makers do a decent multitouch trackpad?)
Considering it's a got 2GHz Atom chip, notching it a 2.4 Windows system rating on the one I messed with, it moved pretty decently, more nimbly than I'd have expected, even with Windows Media Center. This is mostly because of Windows 7 I suspect—with Vista it probably would've been tortuous.
Knowing that it's running Atom inside, when it's wrapped in feats of material and sensory goodness, definitely creates a sense of ambiguity, like Sony's repeating the Vaio P all over again. Like it's special effects. Except that it seems like it sorta kinda works this time, which is the actually weird part.

DoubleTwist + Amazon MP3 Store = One More Reason to Ditch iTunes

Remember doubleTwist, thevery cool iTunes alternative that aims to easily sync any content to any device? Well now the ambitious tool is taking one more step to make iTunes obsolete, incorporating an Amazon MP3-powered music store.
Currently doubleTwist's Amazon MP3 store is only available for the Mac version of the app, but Windows support is coming. The music store looks eerily similar to the iTunes music store (see below), which is a bit silly, but it's clear that doubleTwist is aiming straight for iTunes' jugular, so it's not all that surprising.
(Click the image above for a closer look.)
We've been particularly annoyed lately with Apple's regular refusal to allow generic, non-iPod players to sync with iTunes (it's near the top of our iTunes wishlist), and now that Apple's been given the okay to continue doing just that, we're thrilled to see a third-party solution step in with a goal of providing syncing for any device, iPod or not. doubleTwist's ad from last week (the parody of Apple's famous 1984 ad below) really isn't that much of a stretch at this point.

While I doubt at the moment that a ton of people are fleeing iTunes for doubleTwist, it's great to see doubleTwist continuing to innovate. A solid iTunes alternative that syncs happily with any device and has a built-in music store seems like something people could use.
doubleTwist is freeware, works on Windows and Mac OS X. The addition of the Amazon MP3 store is currently only available on OS X.

How Phishing Works

Suppose you check your e-mail one day and find a message from your bank. You've gotten e-mail from them before, but this one seems suspicious, especially since it threatens to close your account if you don't reply immediately. What do you do?
This message and others like it are examples of phishing, a method of online identity theft. In addition to stealing personal and financial data, phishers can infect computers with viruses and convince people to participate unwittingly in money laundering. In this article, we'll examine the common traits of phishing schemes and the technological tricks that phishers use to deceive people and software.

Most people associate phishing with e-mail messages that spoof, or mimic, banks, credit card companies or other business like Amazon and eBay. These messages look authentic and attempt to get victims to reveal their personal information. But e-mail messages are only one small piece of a phishing scam.
From beginning to end, the process involves:
  1. Planning. Phishers decide which business to target and determine how to get e-mail addresses for the customers of that business. They often use the same mass-mailing and address collection techniques as spammers.
  2. Setup. Once they know which business to spoof and who their victims are, phishers create methods for delivering the message and collecting the data. Most often, this involves e-mail addresses and a web page.
  3. Attack. This is the step people are most familiar with -- the phisher sends a phony message that appears to be from a reputable source.
  4. Collection. Phishers record the information victims enter into web pages or popup windows.
  5.   Identity Theft and Fraud. The phishers use the information they've gathered to make illegal purchases or otherwise commit fraud. As many as a fourth of the victims never fully recover f the phisher wants to coordinate another attack, he evaluates the successes and failures of the completed scam and begins the cycle again. Phishing scams take advantages of software and security weaknesses on both the client and server sides. But even the most high-tech phishing scams work like old-fashioned con jobs, in which a hustler convinces his mark that he is reliable and trustworthy. Next, we'll look at the steps phishers take to convince victims that their messages are legitimate.

Promote Your YouTube Videos Through AdSense Ad Units

Just after create and publish any kind of promotional videos on YouTube, video producers are normally looking for ways to reach more viewers to their videos, from the conventional ways like add relevant video tags to their video published, enhance textual description to let search engines easily find it, embedding uploaded videos to their sites or blogs, viral campaign, and many more. But now video producers can broadens and reach new audiences to their YouTube videos by promoting them through new way: Google AdSense ad units.

YouTube Promoted videos in AdSense ad unitsArlene Lee from Inside AdSense team announce the launch of YouTube Promoted Videos in AdSense ad units. As described in official announcement, by extending promoted videos - i.e. movie trailers or product demo - to AdSense sites, content producers will enable to broaden their reach to hundred of thousands sites and blogs in the giant Google AdSense publishers network.

YouTube Promoted videos in AdSense ad units will appear in the following ad format (as long as AdSense publishers opted these formats in to displaying both text and image ads in their ad units):

- 300x250 Medium Rectangle
- 336x280 Large Rectangle
- 728x90 Leaderboard
- 250x250 Square
- 200x200 Small Square

YouTube Promoted Videos in AdSense ad units contextually targeted to AdSense publisher's pages and feature a thumbnail image with three lines of text. YouTube Promoted Videos compete in standard ad auction - just like other ads - so they'll help drive up competition among advertisers bidding to appear on AdSense publisher's pages. When a Promoted Video wins the ad auction, it'll be shown exclusively in one of the eligible ad formats.

Google AdSense logoYouTube Promoted Videos in AdSense ad units are slightly different from existing AdSense video ads units, which classified as image ads. AdSense video ads stream ads in video format, while YouTube Promoted Videos ad - as it name suggest - when clicked will direct users to watch promoted YouTube videos, or to advertiser's YouTube channel as landing page.

Currently YouTube Promoted Videos in AdSense ad units only available in English to US publishers, but Google AdSense team are looking forward to expanding it to additional regions and languages in the future.

Google Wave Overview - Many of the Promising Features of Google Wave

Since announcement of 100,000 Google Wave Invitations, people start asking any questions about this brand new Google stuff: What is Google Wave? Should I move to Google Wave? Is it something like Facebook or what? What really makes Google Wave different from any other online communication tools and services already exist?

In Google Wave developer conception, a Wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Users can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

So what is Google Wave? It's an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration using Wave principles. A wave can be both a conversation and a document where people can discuss and work together using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

Google Wave support real-time collaboration in which concurrency control technology lets all users on a wave edit rich media at the same time. It also support natural language tools, a server-based models provide contextual suggestions and spelling correction.

Google Wave is not a just-for-fun social networking service that makes any bosses get very angry because his employees waste their time using it. Google let third party developers develop any useful extensions to Google Wave. For example, SAP Research in Brisbane, Australia and SAP NetWeaver Development developed Gravity, a prototype of extension that provides real-time, cloud-based, collaborative business process modelling within Google Wave. Another good examples is Ribbit who brings telephone conference calls to Google Wave, MediaWikiWave, bringing Google Wave technology to Wikipedia, and SalesForce.com who promises their Wave extension that bring the powerful things you can do by using Google Wave with salesforce.com.

In this video Google Product managers Stephanie and Greg explain many of the features of Google Wave:

Google’s Face Recognition Comes to Orkut – Introduces Auto Tagging Feature

Google has mastered it all with it’s face recognition technology which it first introduced in it’s image search some time back and then we saw the same feature being introduced in Google’s Picasa Web Albums. Google has now integrated this facial recognition feature with your orkut albums.
Google's Face Recognition Algorithm
If you are still wondering about this feature, let me simply explain the utility – This feature will automatically tag your friends on your orkut albums thanks to Google’s artificial ‘facial recognition’ intelligence. From The Official Orkut Blog

To speed up the tagging process, we’re launching a face detection feature on all new photos uploaded to orkut. With it, orkut is now able to automatically detect when faces appear in photos (by recognizing features like eyes, noses, mouths, etc.), but without actually identifying specific individuals.
Tags in Orkut Albums
The algorithm is not perfect, however, so things like eyeglasses, difficult lighting, poses, etc. may ‘fool’ our system from time to time. If that ever happens, rest assured that you can always tag photos as you normally would, and of course change or remove any tags that you’re unhappy with.
Anand Pillai, a Software Engineer at Google explains this feature and the bugs you may possibly find in detail on the official orkut blog.
